Broadstream Communications Announces Industry's First Nationwide IPTV Transport Network

November 13, 2003
SEATTLE, WA, November 13, 2003 - Broadstream Communications, Inc. (Broadstream) today announced its IPTV Transport Network and content delivery service. By outsourcing content aggregation and traditional head-end functionality, Broadstream enables telecom service providers to quickly and cost effectively offer the highest quality in digital TV programming over their telecom networks. Broadstream’s IPTV Transport Network enables telcos to offer a wide variety of both network and local channels, as well as pay-per-view and video-on-demand programming over an all-digital IP network.

Broadstream will commence provision of services in the first quarter of 2004, but has already signed a number of advance orders from service providers eager to offer IP Video without the exceptional equipment and operational cost of installing a full digital video head-end facility.

The Broadstream IPTV Transport Network – jointly developed by leading equipment manufacturers and service providers, including TANDBERG Television and Skystream Networks – is a first-of-its-kind platform that completely centralizes the aggregation, real-time digital encoding and IP encapsulation of programmer content, suitable for distribution via xDSL, fiber or wireless networks. Broadstream manages and maintains both the live programming streams and edge equipment installed at the service provider facility 24/7 from its Network Operations Center.

Broadstream plans to offer over 100 video and audio programs in full digital quality, through agreements with nearly every major broadcaster and programmer in the country.

“Broadstream will provide a unique, new and cost-effective approach to delivering IP Video capabilities to telecom service providers, and further demonstrates the telecommunication industry’s commitment to meet the competitive threat posed by the cable industry,” said Anthony Bontrager, president and CEO of Broadstream. “The innovative Broadstream business model is truly disruptive as it destroys the previously held notion that only large service providers could offer IP Video services over their telco networks.”

Key Broadstream features and benefits include:

  • No up-front equipment costs
  • Over 100 “all digital” video and audio programming channels
  • Local encoding platform for local affiliate stations and regional sports networks
  • Fault tolerant network, monitored 24/7
  • Compatibility with existing access networks
Programmer Support for Broadstream

“We are excited to make our programming available through Broadstream’s innovative IP Transport Network, which enables the delivery of digital programming to a wider audience and enhances the consumer experience,” said Tom Gove, senior director of new media at Starz Encore Group.

“ABC Cable Networks Group is pleased to be an inaugural programmer transported on the Broadstream service, which will offer consumers an new way to obtain television programming in the home,” said Dan Catalano, vice president, sales operations and special markets of ABC Cable Networks Group.
Strong Technology Support

“Broadstream represents everything TANDBERG Television is striving to accomplish as a global leader in digital encoding and satellite modulation products,” said Al Nunez, vice president, sales and operations for TANDBERG Television, Inc. “By making powerful new technologies available yet invisible to the user, Broadstream conveniently delivers immediate benefits for service provider and consumer alike.”

"As the leading provider of access solutions to the nation’s independent operating companies, we believe our extensive installed base of TelcoVideo SM-ready platforms uniquely positions both companies to quickly and cost effectively deliver video services to a vast subscriber base,” said Clive Hallatt, director of business development at AFC. “The combined AFC-Broadstream solution minimizes capital expenditures associated with costly headends, enabling telcos that traditionally could not offer video services to reconsider their business models for video deployment.”
Easy, Affordable Service - Everywhere

With coverage of the entire contiguous United States, Broadstream’s IP TV service is available to any and every telecom service provider. There is no equipment for the telco service provider to purchase in order to sign up for the Broadstream IPTV service. Broadstream’s IPTV service is a simple, fixed monthly recurring fee.

Broadstream Communications, Inc. is the leading provider of IPTV network infrastructure services that enable unconstrained delivery of national television content to telecom service providers across the United States. Broadstream operates the industry's first all digital (IP) virtual head-end network and service offering that enables service providers to create an efficient, cost-effective video service offering that breaks economic and performance barriers imposed by self-built head-end systems. With ubiquitous coverage of the entire continental United States from our satellites, Broadstream offers the most extensive IP Video network in the world, and is able to offer the most flexible and complete video solution in the industry.
